Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (TWAM) has responsibility for providing museum development support in the North East region for the period April 2015-March 2018. TWAM is a Major Partner Museum and also a Bridge organisation. Its mission is to deliver a programme that is comprehensive, effective, collaborative and responds to the needs of museums and the communities they serve.

It seeks to ensure that museums deliver excellence in the management and interpretation of collections, that they understand and respond to the needs of their audiences, increasing the size and reach of this engagement, and that they are resilient and sustainable. Museum Development support will result in more confident museums which are outward looking, entrepreneurial in their thinking, sustainable and self-reliant.

What we do

The North East Museum Development Programme provides one point of access (via one full-time manager post) for professional advice and guidance and delivers responsive and strategic support directed by the needs of the North East sector, underpinned by the requirements of the Accreditation standard. We increase capacity and provide access to specialist skills through commissioning and by aligning to Major Partner Museum (MPM) activity and expertise in the region and to other Arts Council England (ACE) funded organisations and initiatives.

The programme can be broken down in to 5 key areas of support:

  • Tailored advice & guidance
  • Programmes of support aligned to the 5 ACE strategic goals
  • Regional initiatives (including marketing the NE sector through www.ilikemuseums.com)
  • A small grants scheme
  • Accreditation advice & support

Our 2015-18 programme has a particular focus on collections care, audience development, resilience and enterprise. Partnership working is central to the programme and we facilitate this both within and outside of the sector, encouraging museums to work together and across other sectors wherever appropriate.
